Originally from Lytham St. Annes, he is a graduate of the University of Huddersfield and also holds diplomas in performing and teaching. Stewart studied singing with Barbara Robotham, John Cameron and Patrick McGuigan and has participated in masterclasses with Dame Janet Baker, Norman Tattersall and Margaret Lane.
His wide-ranging flexible baritone voice allows him to encompass a considerable repertoire from Bach to Britten and he is equally at home in Handel’s “Messiah” as in Orff’s “Carmina Burana”. Onstage, operatic roles have included the Count (Marriage of Figaro), Don Carlos (The Force of Destiny) Melchior (Amahl and the Night Visitors) Papageno (The Magic Flute) and Escamillo (Carmen). A particular interest is in Music Theatre and he has conducted several musicals in the last 30 years.
As a recitalist, Stewart has a passion for art song, especially British songs as well as lieder and melodies which combine his love of music and languages. He has performed in venues from Scotland to Sussex as well as at the South Bank and Royal Albert Hall in London; on radio and television and abroad in Germany and Spain.
After many years teaching music in schools and colleges, latterly as Head of Performing Arts, he is now a freelance musician: Baritone soloist, conductor, accompanist, organist, composer and arranger.
Many students have gone on to study at conservatoires and universities and former students now sing with the Royal Opera and Glyndebourne as well as on the professional stage in musicals.
