I am a performer and teacher in the Durham, North Carolina area. I currently teach at the Durham Arts Council. I have a Masters of Music degree in Opera Performance. But I love all genres and styles and have sung and taught from country to RnB to classical! I am currently surveying singers to see what their needs are in voice lessons. I would love your input.
My Teaching Background
Monifa Harris is originally from South Florida and moved to North Carolina after earning her M.A. in Opera Performance from Longy School of Music in Cambridge, Massachusetts. She enjoys using her foundation of vocal technique to sing across a range of musical genres. She has had the privilege of singing hooks for hip hop tracks, roles with opera companies and concerts of Greek Folk in Greece. She uses this experience to impart the basics of vocal technique to other singers so they can use it to create the music of their choice. Teaching technique along with tools of stage performance will create a confident and well-rounded singer.
Companies she has worked with include: Intermezzo Opera, Opera Company of NC, Capital Opera, NC Ballet, NC Master Chorale and Bulgarian Opera Orchestra. Her newest projects include singing in Flying High with Panayotis Terzakis which highlights and fuses African American Spirituals, Greek Folk Songs and Classical works and Voice Coach /Collaborator for No One Hurts You More Than S/Mother with Shannon Wong Lerner who has published work with the French philosopher Luce Irigaray.
My Teaching Philosophy
I enjoy using my experience to help students quickly become performers as well as better singers. I have made a special effort to respect my students and make sure they are taking home quality, lasting information from their lessons with me.
