Description: Imagine waking to the sound of humming birds humming, surf sifting through sand, pine trees whispering and knowing that you are going to spend the day on the paradise island that once was home to the author Homer (Iliad and Odyssey ). Yes Chios the fourth largest island in the Aegean, beckons and as promised The Hap’ning Place will offer singers the opportunity to participate in a one week seminar of singing on this stupendous island. The five-day course in August will offer the opportunity to sing every day including individual coachings and choral work. The venue is at a former monastery and the music room, shaded by fragrant pine trees is open to the fresh sea breezes only 200 meters away! There will be public performances but also plenty of opportunities to just take it easy too. Coachings are scheduled in the morning, leaving the rest of the day free to explore Chios, lounge on the beach or for the more active types; go scuba diving, wind-surfing, paragliding, mountain climbing,etc. Depending on your choice of accommodation, you won’t be more than 200 meters from the delectable seaside restaurants and the island’s best sandy beach. |

The Course Plan
I suggest that the singers arrive at Chios by Sunday and plan to stay until the following Sunday, (unless of course, you have
chosen to stay longer!) This is a big holiday week for the Greeks so please book your accommodation and flights soon!
Classes will begin Monday August 11 at 9:30 with a group warm
up. At 10:00 am, the singers will begin their individual coaching. The
singers are free for the remainder of the day after their coaching.
The singers will come prepared with at least one song to be
coached and will learn a simple Greek folk song as well. These are to
be performed at the concert at the end of the week. It can be arranged
to receive your Greek song before departure.
There will also be a choir made up of the participants and they will learn at least two songs to be
performed at the end of the week in the concert. |

Accomodation on Chios
The course will be at Marko’s in the resort town of Karfas. Marko’s is a renovated monastery and
has a uniquely peaceful and restorative atmosphere. We have stayed at Markos’ and enjoy the simple,
clean and basic monastic cells with shared bath and kitchen facilities, but we recognize that some people
may desire more traditional “euro” accommodation.
With that in mind, we can also recommend most of the other studios/rooms at Karfas. Last year,
you could expect to pay about €45 for a room per night in August. This would be a typical double room
with a shower, etc. and a small fridge in the room. They are all very near Marko’s so there’s no problem
with getting to the daily seminars. |

Food on Chios
Chios is renowned for its abundant gastronomic delights, and there are very good tavernas
and restaurants within ‘dripping’ distance of the beach. Restaurants with wonderful, fresh Greek
cuisine, as well as an authentic wood-oven pizzeria, offer food all day and late into the evenings.
Small bars, a new air-conditioned internet café, mini-markets and snack bars complete the local
offerings.
Markos the proprietor of Markos’, is also a chef and delights in cooking a full breakfast for a
reasonable price. If you would enjoy this, you just need to mention it to him the day before.
One thing I always laugh about is that the Greeks will never let you go hungry. They are the
most hospitable people I’ve ever met! (and they like their sweets too!) If you are vegetarian, you are
probably already aware of how well provided you are with Greek and Italian cuisine. So, if you’re
thinking you’re going to slim down at this seminar, you’d better sing and swim a lot! |
