Niven Miller
born 1951 in St Monans, Fife, Scotland, won the British Dartington Opera Scholarship. This provided fees and maintenance for two years at the The Opera Studio which subsequently became the National Opera Studio. He was also awarded the Sir James Caird Travelling scholarship for Scotland, enabling him to study with Fernando Carpi (Conservatoire of Geneva), Eduardo Pedrazzoli (La Scala Milan), Heinrich Schmidt, (Vienna Opera House) and Lucien Muratore (Paris). His many other teachers included Mary Garden, Oda Slobaskoya, Dame Maggie Teyte, Hans Oppenheim, Roy Henderson, Sir Steuart Wilson, Boriska Gareb, and master classes with Lotte Lehman. Sir Thomas Beecham gave him many principal roles such as the Duke of Rothsay in Bizet’s Fair Maid of Perth, for the 10th anniversary of the B.B.C. 3rd Programme. Other work included Glyndebourne Opera, Dublin Opera, B.B.C. TV Opera, English Opera Group, and oratorio, recitals and concerts all over the U.K. His annual recital of Scottish songs at the Royal Festival Hall attracted the attention of Decca Records, and on the recommendation of Anna Russell, was soon involved in the International recital circuit. This started with a three month sell out tour of New Zealand followed by Australia and South Africa where he deputised for Mario Lanza, culminating in a New York Town Hall recital sponsored by Anna Russell. His press notices led to concerts all over the U.S. and Canada for thirty years on
