 Elisabeth Nygaard Originally from Norway, I graduated with Distinction from a MA in jazz and contemporary music at Leeds College of Music in 2005. Since graduating I have gained extensive experience as an Vocal teacher. Since fall 2008, I have been the head vocal teacher at Brunel university in London where I have the sole responsibility for the pop, rock and jazz vocal students. I also conduct one to one private vocal tuition, workshops and master classes. I have conducted workshops with children between the ages of 3 and 16 during my recruitment as an ARTIS specialist as well as part of professional performances, and have arranged and lead vocal and improvisation workshops for over 50s as part of Full Circle, a regular community music group, at Oldhams Coliseum Theatre. I have a passion for education, and enjoy the challenge of teaching at different levels, ages, range and abilities. The motivation for my MA was to explore the voice as an instrument and to overcome the traditional stigma of ‘the singer’ and to promote the concept of vocalists as equal musicians. This features heavily in my teaching agenda, through technical and theoretic training. I strongly believe that expression through the media of music and singing is highly therapeutic, and I promote this idea in my teaching through fun and unconventional methods. Students develop an understanding of the different physiological aspects and components of the voice resulting in a more informed approach to technique and also how to maintain a healthy and safe practice. Depending on the style of music and choice of study, I always enjoy the challenge of devising new ways of exploring and developing my student’s individual requirements and creativity. My varied performance schedule enables me to better guide my students and provide quality education according to their diverse musical interests and abilities.
