The Circle of Fifths is one of the most useful tools available to music students and professional musicians. It offers visual clues about a number of musical aspects including key signatures, harmonic relationships, and chord progressions. Familiarity with the circle can help the music student grasp some of the basic principles of western music.The Circle of Fifths is an abstract idea intended to portray musical relationships. This is not a new idea – various methods have been in place since at least the time of the ancient Greeks.
The purpose of our Circle of FifthsTM Book, The Musical Circle of Fifths from Pythagoras to present day is to provide a complete overview of the Circle of Fifths. It will hopefully have something of interest for everyone – from the beginning music student to the more advanced musician looking to expand his or her tonal vocabulary. If it stimulates the imagination and provides new outlooks, iti will have met its goal.
